DOK Talks

Kino und Kampf – The Talk on the Retrospective
Wednesday, 28/10, 16:00 | Zeitgeschichtliches Forum

A large number of analogue prints of the films of the revolutionary Latin American cinema of the 1960s/70s can be found in the Arsenal archive and the Federal Archives. The paths they took to get there also give an account of collaborations between East and West German film festivals, distributors and archives despite the Iron Curtain. Join this discussion about the history and the significance of institutional collaboration today.

Moderator: Vivien Buchhorn

Guest:

  • Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (Arsenal Film-institut)
  • Petra Rauschenbach (German Federal Archives)
  • Stefanie Eckert (DEFA Foundation)
  • Florian Wüst (curator)

Eastern German Perspectives in Documentary Film
Friday, 30/10 16:00 | VHS Löhrstraße

What makes up East Germany, what themes are in intense circulation here and how do the realities of East German life find their way on to the big screen and into the media? This talk in collaboration with the weekly newspaper “der Freitag” asks about visibility, dominant narratives and the images created of the East – and about its representation in the film landscape of the country as a whole. These ideas will be discussed by Fokus Ost filmmakers and curator Grit Lemke.

Moderator: Barbara Schweizerhof

Guest:

  • Ina Borrmann (“Guten Abend, du Schöne”)
  • Sonja Hilberger (“Die Klasse von 1990”)
  • Dieter Schumann (“Garten der Hoffnung”)
  • Grit Lemke (curator “Fokus Ost”)

Debate Formats in Positions
Extended Discussions After the Film Screenings

Step outside the festival box with Positions, our new film programme and its extended discussions.

Can we protest with art alone? How is power created within institutions and how can we prevent this power from being abused? Filmmakers, festival guests and audiences will reflect on these questions. A highlight is two debate formats developed by Berlin Critics’ Week. On Wednesday, “this, too will be liquid” and “Atlas of Disappearance” lead into “Steilvorlage”, a debate on films and curation. On Thursday, “Detention” is followed by “Reaktionszeit”, a discussion with invited guests before the director joins.

Curated by Ola Staszel, Vika Leshchenko, Woche der Kritik

Masterclass: Helena Třeštíková

Helena Třeštíková has left her mark on longitudinal observation like few other filmmakers, capturing chronicles of life at the very centre of society and at its fringes. Moderated by Grit Lemke, this masterclass offers personal insights into the Czech director’s working methods and documentary ethics.

Masterclass: Anita Killi

Anita Killi traces Trollfilm’s journey from the first multiplane stand and her 1992 film “The Glass Ball” to a new stand planned for 2026. She explores analogue animation as a tool for approaching themes that are difficult to talk about directly, inviting viewers to be co-creators.

Animation Perspectives

Animation Perspectives is a blind date, a film programme and workshop tour all rolled into one. Edition #8 is a meeting between Anton Cla and Franz Impler, who toy with the charming limitations of early game animations. Glitches and erratic spatial coordinates, striking design and shiny colours form a habitat for quirky figures and their absurd, ambiguous stories.

Anton Cla_Franz Impler

The two former DOK Leipzig competition participants from Ghent and Leipzig have been astonishing festivals for several years with their animations for award-winning short films, theatre-like performances, experimental micro-reels and music videos.

Extremely refreshing in terms of narrative style and design, they build bridges to their other passions – drawing, illustration, comics and computer graphics.

Featuring the films:

  • “Gum Bubble Buddy”, “Out of Bounds”, “Hidden Message”, “Breaking the Law”, “Changeover”, “Nothing to expect“” and “A Wish” by Franz Impler

  • “Valse Muziek: Electricity”, “Dysphasia”, “Elegy of Time”, “Joeri is verliefd (maar...) + Zijn hart ligt op te grond (maar...)”, “Fiddlehead/Happy Mondays: Tart Tart excerpt” und “Cyclepaths” by Anton Cla
